Did you know that enamel is the hardest substance your body produces? It’s even stronger than bone, but that doesn’t make it invincible. Bacteria in your mouth create acids that can wear through the protective outer layer to penetrate deeper into the structure of your teeth.

Thankfully, Dr. Miller and the rest of our team in Marysville provide a natural solution for cavities with tooth-colored fillings. Continue reading to learn more about this standard service, and feel free to contact us if you have additional questions!

What are Tooth-Colored Fillings?

In the past, amalgam metal restorations were used to mend dental problems. Although this material is incredibly durable, it doesn’t bond with teeth and expands and contracts with changes in temperature, which can eventually erode them from the inside out.

Thanks to more recent developments in dental technology and techniques, today, Dr. Miller can rebuild damaged enamel with color-matched composite resin. This material is biocompatible and bonds with your enamel to preserve more of the structure of your tooth while protecting it from additional harm.

The Process of Getting a Tooth-Colored Filling

It can vary based on your unique circumstances, but typically you can expect the following steps during your procedure:

  • We’ll apply a local anesthetic to keep the nerves in your teeth and gums from sending pain signals to your brain, and we can also provide nitrous oxide (laughing gas) sedation to help you feel calm and relaxed.
  • Cleaning your tooth. Next, we must remove decayed and damaged materials and sanitize your tooth to eliminate unwanted bacteria.
  • Applying resin. Miller will apply composite resin customized to match your natural hue directly to your tooth in layers to rebuild the decayed sections of enamel.
  • We’ll use a special ultra-violet light to cure the material so it hardens and bonds with your enamel.
  • Finalizing results. We’ll trim away any excess material and polish your tooth to a shine.

This treatment is typically straightforward and can often be completed in a single, hour-long appointment.

The Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings

There are several advantages to treating your cavities with our Northwest Family Dental of Marysville team, including:

  • Enhance your appearance. Unlike metal fillings, which can look dark and dirty in your mouth, these tooth-colored restorations help you look and feel like the most beautiful version of yourself to boost your confidence.
  • Easy maintenance. Brushing and flossing twice daily and scheduling a routine visit with us every six months are all that’s needed to keep your dental work in excellent condition for years.
  • Long-lasting repair. It can last anywhere from 5 to 15+ years if you care for it properly.
  • Reduce sensitivity. Amalgam restorations carry changes in temperature into the nerves in your teeth or trigger allergic reactions if you’re sensitive to the material, which doesn’t happen with biocompatible resin fillings.
  • Preserve your tooth. The material bonds with your enamel, eliminating the need to etch grooves into the structure of your tooth to hold it in place, as is the case with metal fillings.
